What a compliant accessibility statement needs

A usable, defensible accessibility statement generally includes:

  • A conformance target — usually WCAG 2.1 or 2.2, Level AA, the baseline referenced by both the EU Web Accessibility Directive/EAA and most US ADA settlement agreements.
  • Your current conformance status — fully, partially, or not conformant — stated honestly. Overclaiming conformance is a common source of legal exposure.
  • Known limitations — specific, named barriers (e.g. an unlabeled form field, a video without captions) rather than vague disclaimers.
  • A feedback mechanism — a clear way for users to report barriers and a reasonable response-time commitment.
  • Preparation and review dates — when the statement was written and when it was last reviewed.
  • Enforcement contact (EU) — for public-sector or EAA-covered statements, many jurisdictions expect a reference to the national monitoring/enforcement body if internal feedback isn't resolved.

FAQ

What must an accessibility statement contain?

At minimum: a named conformance standard (usually WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA), your current conformance status, known limitations and their impact, a feedback mechanism, and the date prepared/reviewed. EU statements often add an enforcement-body reference.

Is an accessibility statement legally required under the EAA?

The EAA sets conformance requirements for covered products and services, and many member states additionally require a published statement — especially where the EU Web Accessibility Directive already applies. Requirements vary by country; check your local transposition law or consult counsel.

Is this generator a substitute for a professional accessibility audit?
